We encountered a Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying through the area, which kindly landed in a tree and allowed for photography! Grey-headed Fish Eagle. Although the tide was in we were still able to observe several species of shorebird on Pulau Sekudu. In fact the island was not busy in any area, especially if you were on foot.

The Southern Banded Snake-Eagle is listed as Near Threatened as there is only an estimated global population of 1000–3000 individuals. Though I actually quite like zebras. However, for beautiful birds such as the Red-capped Robin-Chat , some exceptions ought to be made.

So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. The African Fish Eagle was a great first day bird. The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing.

The first birds that we saw when entering the area were Black-faced Woodswallows , Galahs , Zebra Finch , Budgerigars and White-winged Trillers. These included the Nankeen Kestrel and the Wedge-tailed Eagle. It is always tricky trying to photograph a Wedge-tailed Eagle , but I did attempt it! Wedge-tailed Eagle.

There were plenty of passerines among the bushes and trees when we wandered the edge of the lake including Yellow Chats , Jacky Winter , Brown Honeyeater , White-plumed Honeyeater , Singing Honeyeater , Yellow-throated Miner , Zebra Finch , Red-capped Robin , Restless Flycatcher and Spotted Bowerbird.

Javan Mynas , Olive-backed Sunbirds , Spotted Doves , Rock Doves , Zebra Doves , Common Tailorbirds , Blue-tailed Bee-eaters , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Pink-necked Green Pigeons , House Sparrows and Black-naped Orioles were in that location. House Swifts , Pacific Swallows , a Brahminy Kite and a White-bellied Sea Eagle soared through the sky.

Arriving at the rest area we added a Red-backed Kingfisher to our notebook closely followed by Diamond Doves , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. We had seen a pair of Little Eagles the day before further north with a recently caught item of food, so it was an excellent area for birds of prey. Native Mistletoe and Zebra Finch nest.

For a split-second I was considering the white morph of the Booted Eagle… while noticing that they do not have long stork necks and that they were… Egyptian Vultures ! A pair of screeching Blacksmith Lapwings was flying around as six Burchell’s Zebras were quenching their thirst, suspiciously observing surroundings every now and then.

Recent studies in Sri Lanka have revealed that, upon sighting a predator, a drongo will imitate the alarm calls of at least 4 other bird species (babblers, laughing thrushes, bulbuls, and others), as well as the call given by the specific predator, i.e. a giant squirrel or eagle.

The species found are a mix of savannah and desert species, including some impressive birds of prey like the Martial Eagle and African Hawk-eagle. It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)).

Among these bizarre plants we observed Orange Chats , Crimson Chats , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. They are obviously a salt bush that loves the area.

Brown Falcons , a Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed Eagles and also a Nankeen Kestrel hunted in the general area of the pool and were seen regularly during the day. There were two young Whistling Kites in the nest this year, but on dusk they would stretch out and looked like they would soon be leaving the nest to explore the area.
