There are often a pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles present and they were there. White-bellied Sea-Eagle nest with Budgerigars above There were numerous Whistling Kites sitting in nests and we were intrigued to see that Zebra Finch had built their own nests in the base of the nest.

Last remaining water before the rain

There were literally hundreds of Peaceful Doves , Diamond Doves and both Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch coming in to drink. Last weekend we got to the lake quite early, but the heat haze was already pretty bad. The birds were all gathering around the edges and flying in to drink. There were also Crested Pigeons and Bar-shouldered Doves.

I know it is a bit unfair to this Purple-crested Turaco , but I always wanted to use this Raymond Chandler quotation on a bird: “He wore a two-tone leisure jacket which would have been revolting on a zebra.” Not too many raptors, but at least an African Fish Eagle. The photo shows less than 0.000001% of the global population.

Bird-watching at Langi Crossing

One of the most efficient fishing birds on the river is the White-bellied Sea-Eagle. White-bellied Sea-Eagle. Grey-crowned Babbler in a tree. Jacky Winter. Long-tailed Finch. We usually encounter a pair of them when we visit the river. A huge selection of birds were observed flying across the river and both up and down the river.

Camping by the Fitzroy River

Our walk downstream added a few more bird species including Zebra Finch , Purple-backed Fairywrens , Rufous Songlarks , Black-breasted Buzzard , Black Falcon and Common Greenshank. The pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles had positioned themselves on the old telegraph pole that used to carry the line across the Fitzroy River many years ago.

The finches are always well represented with Zebra Finch , Double-barred Finch and sometimes you are lucky enough to get brief glimpses of Pictorella Mannikins. Raptors are usually represented by Black Kites , Whistling Kites , Brown Goshawk , Wedge-tailed Eagle and Spotted Harrier. Black-fronted Dotterel feeding.
