Our own version of Gullmania began with the first documented sighting of a Heerman’s Gull. I’ll be looking for them, transporting myself via telescope way out over the waves of the gulf. That’s why, as of late, the most heavily visited birding hotspot in Costa Rica has been the busy port town of Puntarenas.

I’ve even been reaching out to shelters of north to see if they work with any shelters in the Houston for transporting animals to their shelters up north. I will be able to provide all of the documentation if we surrender her to a shelter or an individual. No one is taking any animals at this time. So far no luck.

A letter requesting information on the permit issued to remove the nest got this response from the city, “In reference to your request for documentation for the removal of an active Osprey nest from the light pole at the soccer field, please be advised that none exist.

They are colourful and small, some mere newspaper kiosks transported here, barely big enough for a bed and fishing rods. I usually end the day watching the sunset underneath the buttresses of the mediaeval Ram Fortress (cover photo), mentioned for the first time in a historical document from the year 1128.

The economic “impact” of a birding festival can be estimated by looking at expenditures of attendees ( e.g., hotel rooms, meals, souvenirs, transportation costs, etc.). Thus, there is no conventional market-clearing price for economists to observe, so it is much harder to document society’s collective overall willingness to pay.

It’s about packaging, marketing, distribution, transportation, and lobbying. I was surprised, however, that there is no mention of one of the dark spots in bird feeding history, the highly publicized application of toxic insecticides to Scott’s Miracle-Gro bird seed from 2005 to 2008 and the accompanying falsification of documents to hide it.
