Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. while herbivores are represented by Chital and Sambar (above) deer, Wild Boar , Nilgai antelope, etc. Yes, we did – so what?

Although the refuge was established in 1964 in part to protect crane habitat, a pair did not return until 1972, and the first nests were observed in 1976. There were several conspicuous groups of Hairy Woodpeckers, including this female. A deer watches me as I watch it from the observation platform. The Conboy Lake CCP is here.

The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area.
