Winter Wanderland

10,000 Birds

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. We got at least three sub-species but the highlight was a Wilson’s Snipe we flushed. I flew into Denver from Mexico. I ticked off 9 lifers.

Arizona, or Central Mexico?

10,000 Birds

All sorts of exotic and beautiful species may be seen. This would sound attractive even to me, except for one fact: almost all of those exotic and beautiful species are common down here in central Mexico. Southeastern Arizona is unusual, precisely because its species mix is as much Mexican as it is American.

10,000 Birds

One of the advantages of Morelia as a birding/tourist destination is that we receive direct flights from Houston on United, Dallas/Fort Worth on American, and Los Angeles, Oakland, San Jose (California), and Chicago/Midway on the Mexican carrier Volaris. One species of interest is more common on Punhuato than in los Filtros: the Spotted Wren.

The Littel Big Year – Week 45: Wrapping up the Bahamas

10,000 Birds

We also got an extra stop in Dallas, Texas (Hey wasn’t I just here) but again no birds could be added, unless I count the House Sparrow flying around inside the terminal. By the time we had ended our visit on the island, I had racked up a total of 58 birds species, with 27 of them new birds on the Little Big Year list.

Listening to Falcons: The Peregrines of Tom Cade

10,000 Birds

His parents moved where opportunity beckoned, taking him from San Angelo, Texas, to Columbus, New Mexico, then to Dallas, and finally on to California. He had stalked the nest for days, waiting for just the right time when she would be on the verge of fledging, then took her into his care. And grow they did.
