Still fuelled by the euphoria of getting a great look at the Double-toothed Kite , an infrequently encountered resident of Trinidad’s forests – we found a Chestnut Woodpecker working a tangle in the distant canopy. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. We are nearing the waterhole, and see the large oval shadow in the darkness: that White Rhino cow with a calf. Sniffing us.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

The rooms are floating in a pond and the pond provides a home for a Eurasian Beaver family. Disappointingly, a very interesting area was closed off for the cows to rest (what about a nice stable?) Yes, that’s where I was going – the Oostvaardersplassen – and the hotel has a little bridge straight into the National Park.
