An afternoon in the Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

Oostvaardersplassen

The rooms are floating in a pond and the pond provides a home for a Eurasian Beaver family. Disappointingly, a very interesting area was closed off for the cows to rest (what about a nice stable?) Yes, that’s where I was going – the Oostvaardersplassen – and the hotel has a little bridge straight into the National Park.
