Here at 10,000 Birds we are going to dedicate the coming week, from today until Saturday, to invasive species. Of course, most of the species we will cover will fit the more traditional definition of invasive species, which usually only covers introduced species that are doing harm to species in the areas to which they are introduced.

Listers are quick to put aside their condemnation of invasive species once they attain that coveted status of exotic: not native, not fully naturalized, but established well enough to be countable by the prevailing authority. Grallards: New Zealand’s Next Extinction or Newest Species?

The obvious choice was the Mallard , that plucky familiar northern hemisphere species that is the father of the even more familiar domesticated duck. In fact, as the species was quickly identified as as creating hybrids with Grey Ducks, the opinion was by the 1920s that the species shouldn’t be released further.

White-winged Black Terns and Whiskered Terns near Broome

The Terns were quite content loafing on the highway and flying off when the limited traffic approached as you can see above. The cattle moved away from the flooded areas and the area beside the highway is home to many species of birds. We did not get the huge flocks of locusts this year like we did in 2021.

Spotting My Florida Birds on their Maine Breeding Grounds

Surrounded by native plants and at the edge of the woods, her feeders were always hotspots for interesting migratory and wintering species. On this particular day, I wanted to see one species and one species only: the Purple Finch. I never expected another opportunity to see a Purple Finch in 2021.

The Change in Seasons

We typically celebrate sightings and not a change in air temperature or moisture content. Even species that do not undergo visible changes (to us, at least) begin to behave differently. Bearing witness to the cyclical fluctuations of the seasons is a boon to the psyche on a level that tends to go unnoticed and unannounced.
