Broome’s Pied Oystercatchers are breeding again

Since I found the first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 I have learnt that the eggs rarely hatch due to predation and if they do hatch then a fully fledged chick is a rare and wonderful outcome. This year has been like other years with the first eggs being laid late June and the first chicks hatching recently.

Not to give the whole content away, but one of the highlights certainly is the statement that the “proventriculus glands were constituted by many round or elliptical glandular lobules” Apparently , Crested Mynas frequently use snake slough (the skin shed by snakes) as part of their nest-building materials.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of September 2019)

We nailed down a few lifers for Ivy, the best of which was Yellow-crowned Night-heron at Big Egg Marsh, which we don’t ever see upstate. The only unfortunate thing was that Corey was not even halfway up the pond and had to content himself with distant scope looks at the avocets from the Raunt.

To the north they are very unlucky with predation before the eggs even hatch out, but to the south the eggs hatch out and then the predation occurs on the chicks. A normally quiet species, that walks a lot more than it flies, takes on a whole new role once it has laid eggs.
