The list includes Bachmann’s Sparrow , Red-cockaded Woodpecker , Crested Caracara , Snail Kite , and, oddly, Whooping Crane. It was in the company of some Sandhill Cranes , birds that looked drab and uninspiring by comparison. On my previous trips I was successful on each and every species except for the crane.

In comparison to the Dorcol Promenade, number of both species and individuals here is smaller. The next winter bird spot lies some 4.5 km / 2 mi downriver – the Ada Huja Promenade. In this section, the Danube is twice as wide and without a scope you would be wasting time here. If that is the case, why come here at all?

I got my scope on it and was shocked: “ Red-headed Woodpecker !” Matthieu picked out, in rapid succession, a Black-crowned Night-Heron in flight over Brooklyn, two Great Egrets , and a Snowy Egret , the latter only identified by comparison to the Great Egrets it was next too. The distance we were working at was amazing.

Both parks are pretty and well-attended but comparisons essentially should stop there. Discovery Park is not in the middle of Seattle but way out to the north in the Magnolia neighborhood. Central Park is surrounded by tall buildings while Discovery Park is on Puget Sound and has beaches.

A quick comparison of how raptor species are depicted in Eastern Birds as compared to the photographic images in Raptors shows that each title has unique images. Those cameras are aimed at hawks.
