There are always stray cattle to watch out for, but we prefer to minimize the risk of hitting animals by leaving on road trips until a couple of hours after sunrise. Cockatoo Creek had stopped flowing many months ago, but the water that remained was a good water source for the cattle in the area and also the birdlife.

We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills. However, during a storm the chains that kept it anchored broke off and the raft is now stranded on the shore, accessible to stray dogs and not used for breeding.

Above the reedbeds, there were numerous Common Sand Martins (Bank Swallows), with a few Barn Swallows , while the large herd of grazing cattle (one of them particularly interested in licking the dust off my car) was followed by two dozen Western Yellow Wagtails. The Danube shallows are waterless.

, and at the same time not grumpy enough to make them draw their guns (yep – it’s a true story, but do not trust the first impression: they were rough on the outside and soft on the inside, e.g. being fiercely protective of stray dogs and cats – that particular guy kept about five dogs and 15 cats, and they all lived together peacefully).

And of course, there are Cattle Egrets ( Bubulcus ibis ) and several species of cowbirds that rarely stray too far from livestock. For most of history, beer has thrived in agrarian settings, too.

Of the estimated 500 million cattle in India, only 4% were destined for consumption by humans as meat. The disappearance of vultures has allowed other species such as rat and [stray] dog populations to grow. Oddly, I saw no rats, only a mongoose or two and a few stray dogs. Although they breed on the west coast of Florida, Snowy Plover is a rare stray to this part of the state. A La Sagra’s Flycatcher, a Caribbean stray, continued at Charles Deering Estate. Cattle Egret: 133. American White Pelican: 19. Brown Pelican: 53. American Bittern: 2. Great Blue Heron: 62. Great Egret: 75. Snowy Egret: 49.
