The proximity of both slopes also facilitates seeing a lot of different species in a short span because the montane barrier has resulted in differences in terms of species and habitats. Nothing like watching kettle after kettle of Turkey Vultures , and Broad-winged and Swainson’s Hawks pass overhead for hours.

And unlike the protection of cormorants, which was perceived as a problem, protection of pelicans was welcomed by the local communities. Nikos managed to show us the incubating Cattle Egrets, of which only 2 or 3 pairs breed in this enormous heronry, counting up to 9000 pairs back in 2014.

By 6am we had our first Australian Brush-Turkey as shown in the above photograph and the list was soon started. Laughing Kookaburras with Australian Brush-Turkey in the background at a campsite. At high tide the shorebirds have a protection wall where they can roost on green lawn and feel safe. Cattle Egret and cattle.
