Just as the ranger was telling us that we might see wild cats – well, not wild cats, but rather, Wildcats , the wild version of the domestic cat, Felis silvestris lybica , one of those cats popped its head out of the brush about 50 feet beyond her. The most interesting thing about this cat was lack of kitty-cat-ness.

One year we found an impressively big calidus Peregrine, feeding on a Wigeon that it had killed. There’s usually a wintering Peregrine around A resting Sparrowhawk Wild Cat – note the thick, bushy tail. A wanderer from the arctic, we thought at first it might have been a Saker, a bird I have yet to see here.

A morning in a Kalahari Leopard’s life

We waited with baited breath wondering what would emerge from the obstructing grass and after 3 minutes or so, a very proud young Leopard appeared with a massive and freshly dead African Wild Cat in her jaws. The killing of other predators eliminates competition for prey and at the same time also provides calories, so is doubly beneficial.
