Childhood memories flooded back in, and I began my search for the poor victims of this bird, so lovingly nicknamed “The Butcher Bird” Nothing was found, not a grasshopper, lizard, nothing. Shrikes by the numbers: The family Laniidae is composed of 31 species of shrike, around the globe. Sometimes reality is so unfair!

No wonder they’ve earned the moniker “butcher bird.” ” This one was calling to its family group as they wandered through the thorns searching for tidbits. The Long-tailed Fiscal pictured below has found a grasshopper and keeps a firm grip on both ends as it finds the nearest thorn laden bush.

Though, to be honest, I haven’t really birded all that much as this is a family vacation.). This bird had just landed after doing its flight display in perfect light for me to get photographs but, of course, I butchered the opportunity. Yellow-breasted Chats are actually pretty easy to see in Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

Sure, it’s been well over a month since I returned from my fun-filled, family vacation to Honduras but that doesn’t mean that it’s too late to blog about it, right? I don’t know how I managed to completely butcher all of my shots of what was essentially a stationary subject. Lunch time!

Feeding birds is generally regarded as a harmless past-time, a wholesome way for people to share nature and enjoy wildlife with the family. Since the order went into effect, Claire Butcher continued to feed the ducks in the park and was allegedly observed bringing entire shopping carts filled with food. She added more corn.
