We discovered that they are actually breeding at the base of a tree that hangs down into the water on the left in the photos above. The Great Bowerbirds only collect white and green, but they have mostly collected white rocks at this location. Great Bowerbird bower. Australasian Grebe on a nest.

It was our first encounter of Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding and they had found the perfect environment. Last week I told you about our lucky find at the Fortescue River between Nullagine and Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. We have never seen as many Zebra Finches as we have this year and there are a lot more Budgerigars and Diamond Doves in the Broome area. It is unclear as to whether they have all had a good breeding season or if they are dispersing to different areas this year.

This juvenile Brown Goshawk spent an hour standing in the water source that is very popular with the Double-barred Finches and Zebra Finches that visit our garden. There were numerous birds stood around the edge of the lake and they were still in their breeding plumage and had their bills open in the heat.

Zebra Finch , Star Finch , Double-barred Finch , Masked Finch , Pictorella Mannikins , Peaceful Doves , Diamond Doves , Bar-shouldered Doves and Crested Pigeons were constantly dropping to the water’s edge to drink. There were several Black-tailed Godwits that had returned from their migration to the northern hemisphere to breed.

The Grey-headed Lapwing- Vanellus cinereus breeds in north-east China and Japan between April and June and then migrate to spend the winter in northern Southeast Asia from northeastern India to Cambodia and southern Japan. We don’t “twitch” birds, but it would be a bird to look out for during our visit.

Rufous-throated Honeyeaters were getting moisture from the long grass and the Zebra Finch were making the most of all of the fresh seed. There were several Masked Lapwings and Black-winged Stilt that appeared to be breeding and also Black-fronted Dotterel. Royal Spoonbill and Australian Pelicans. Black-fronted Dotterel nesting.
