Most of the breeding birds returning here will arrive within the next 10 days to two weeks. Late this week I sorted through three hundred trying, unsuccessfully, to find the odd Iceland Gulls that turn up each year. My favourite spot will be frantic with shorebirds soon, arriving, displaying, breeding and disappearing to nest.

Nick finds a bird-shaped protrusion at the top of the rock – Black-eared Wheatear , not exactly a species I expect to observe from a boat deck. This shearwater is a Mediterranean endemic, breeding from Sardinia and Corsica to the Adriatic and the Aegean. The Sun already sets and I haven’t seen a new species in a while.

ALWAYS assume there is some other bird species in there that you have not found yet. Here is a flock of endangered species. Some birds breed in flocks, at least in part to avoid predation. Could a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper be mixed in with that flock of Pectorals ? These Piping Plovers were photographed at White Lake, North Dakota.

The best birds we came up with on our circuit of each island was Great Cormorants in breeding plumage, very nice birds to see but not the rare gulls for which we were hoping. The islands have long been abandoned and now host heronries in the summer and a horde of gulls in the winter. Can you guess how we spent our time?

A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list.

It breeds in Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard and overwinters (singly and at mountain top hot springs – if Hollywood is to be trusted) along the coasts of northern Europe. In my native Serbia, I’ve observed this species in winter only once, while here in East Anglia every site held one. Nearby Cantley Marshes were the next stop.

Last night I saw my second plover species of the year, a Common Ringed Plover. At the same time as he was doing his study on Kumlein’s (Iceland) Gulls and Thayer’s Gulls Smith supposedly gathered data on both Common Ringed and Semipalmated Plover (which both nested in the area) and the hybridization of the two species.

The 7th edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America covers 1,023 species that reside, migrate, or have been documented as accidentals or exotics in North America. So, yes, Thayer’s Gull is in the book, but the reader is cautioned that the gull with be lumped with Iceland Gull “in the near future.”

This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. 2012 has certainly been a bumper year for me with an estimated year list of around 3,000 species after extensive travels to South Africa, Ethiopia, South Korea, Indonesia, the Russian Far East, United Kingdom, Peru, Guatemala and Panama.
