Somewhere around the Platte River one of the Audubon boys received a black-footed hide from a fur trader. When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population. John Bachmann headed west to gather material for Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America.

The highlight of the weekend was seeing a pair foraging on a beach, searching the sand and tide strands for various morsels like a turnstone, and approaching the dozing New Zealand Fur Seal without the slightest sign of fear. In fact, it has nothing to do with a dog’s fur. What happens is that the dander is released via fluids or gets embedded in the dog’s fur which is then spread in the air and attached on multi-surfaces when a dog urinates, salivates or sheds. That said, dander can be found on all breeds, long-haired and short haired ones too.

Their nest is typically built with a base of bark strips and flakes with lumps of earth; with a cup of finer bark shreds, grasses and rootlets, but mainly lined with fur. These are nestlings, just a few days old, in their comfy, fur-lined nest, begging for food.

The only other significant mainland breeding colony is based about an hour out of Cape Town on the east coast at a place called Betty’s Bay. Thanks to fencing off of the breeding area, attacks from land predators have declined and now all four of the local cormorant species can also be found breeding at the colony.
