I had only seen this species once here, in 2018. Virginia Warbler: The Virginia Warbler is a common species in the thorn forest of the Balsas River Basin, so I had seen it often. This is the only migratory warbler to live entirely within Mexico, breeding in the northeast and wintering in the southwest. How did I miss that?

My family and I were staying at the edge of a sand beach, facing a wide flat in a house charmingly named “Bone Ami.” Unlike Sanderlings, their legs were yellow, and they were distinctively a plover species. Ruddy Turnstones , morphing from winter to breeding plumage, mixed with a new shorebird. Abaco is beautiful.

Of the more than 400 tyrannids, as birds in this family are sometimes called, only three belong to the genus Sayornis , the phoebes. The Great Egret was in breeding plumage and courtship posture–bright lime green lores, head bending down and then snapping up, long, impossibly delicate plumes waving over its body as if possessed by independent spirits. I do think that only a few birders, those interested in United States history, would enjoy the biography as a whole.

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. The 39 owls include five endemic Caribbean species.

Superficially, it resembled the Black-chinned Sparrow of the southwestern United States with its gray chest and chestnut streaked with black back.
