Here in the Brecks – an area of poor, sandy soils on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk – we have a small but important breeding population. They favour the old heaths, but a number of pairs also breed on farmland. Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve holds the highest density of nesting Curlews in the Brecks.

We have recently come across several Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles families around Broome. They are often in large groups in these areas when they are not breeding. They generally lay four eggs, but we have only seen a maximum of three surviving chicks after a few days.

After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. The more brightly coloured female bird remained at the back of the family group as they swam to shore.

Another cool fact was learning that the Barn Swallows has started to breed in South America since the 80s. This is quite a remarkable fact if one thinks that this is the only (and first to do this) migratory bird to change its breeding and migratory habits. Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.) At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets.

Of the sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers between Gantheaume Point and Willie Creek on the south side, which is a length of breeding territories covering 23 kilometres-just over 14 miles-only one chick fledges most years. They are still grouped together with their parents and there is a short “peep” as I approach.

Last Sunday, it was never as obvious as it was with the small group of Phainopepla , Phainopepla nitens. A member of the small Ptiliogonatidae family of silky-flycatchers, of which there are only three other species besides our local Phainopepla , Phainopepl nitens. It would appear that this is the only bird with this capability.

They are nomadic, especially in the non-breeding season and flocks are most easily found at waterholes when they appear to quench their thirst.

Like many of the largest species within bird families, the Great Parrotbill looks somewhat plain, at least in the weather I encountered it. Calls include nasal wheezes, squeals, cackling and churring; combinations of rather high nasal “u-err”, quick high nasal “ii” and rolling “pwaaowa” calls uttered by groups of two or more individuals.
