Such programs are somewhat inefficient anyway – in one study , the breeding success of wild male pheasants was 2-5 times higher than for hand-reared and released ones while for females, hand-reared birds were 3 times as vulnerable to predation as the wild ones. And of course, the photos here show a female, as far as I can tell.

In Costa Rica, we have our pewees, 6 species of them. Three live and breed here, two migrate through the country in large numbers (one of those also breeds here in small numbers), and another migrates through and winters in Costa Rica. A common bird of hot, tropical habitats, it is very much an edge species.

By late March, hordes of Laughing Gulls and multiple species of pelagic terns gather for their turn. I did however manage to be in the right place at the right time to experience a gang of Magnificent Frigatebirds that had a Red-footed Booby surrounded. The birds are not allowed to breed on the runway, but many loaf around on it. The most dominant tern species on Tern Island is the Sooty Tern. Around 100,000 of these terns breed on almost every available space on the island, and walking through groups of them is a deafening and quite painful experience.

I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them.
