Cypriot Delights: Part I

10,000 Birds

First recorded breeding on the island in 2013, this dove is now both widespread and common. Once considered a distinct race of the more widespread Pied Wheatear, it is now regarded as a full species in its own right. They are very late breeders, as they feed their young on autumn migrants which they generally intercept out to sea.

10,000 Birds

Least Bittern at Arshamomaque Preserve

10,000 Birds

When birders way out on the east end of Long Island reported breeding Least Bitterns at Arshamomaque Preserve in the town of Southold, my interest was momentarily piqued but I figured that I wouldn’t have time to go looking for them what with work and family obligations. The last one were breeders also, at Massapequa Preserve. ).
