For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). Not only that, but shortly after I moved to New York City in 2008 the Parks Department ripped out a whole bunch of invasive species, worked hard to prevent them from coming back, and planted a bunch of native species. Even while growing in a brand new tail feather this Eastern Kingbird had no problem catching bugs.

I didn’t realize how many new species I would see within the city itself! It’s a strange experience looking up from a city street to gaze at birds native to South America; even more ironic considering humans drove the only native parrot/parakeet species, the Carolina Parakeet , to extinction.

Although higher numbers of singing Orange-billed Nightingale Thrushes and Red-billed Pigeons were reminders of bird species with distributions that are moving uphill in response to warmer, drier weather, it was nice to see that good numbers of Long-tailed Silky-Flycatchers were present, and I had a couple of uncommon Yellow-bellied Siskins.

As this African Green Pigeon shows, the color should offer good camouflage for species living on trees. In case you do not know that brimstone is sulfur, the Brimstone Canary brings the point home by having the Latin species name sulphurata. Continuing down the highway from Doolena Gorge towards Marble Bar you pass through a spectacular rock formation with a brand new section of bitumen. It is incredible how many species you can see in a few minutes. There was no other water nearby, so within a few minutes we observed numerous species. . Crested Pigeon.
