Why Tucson, for the birds of course!

Now that Jeanne and I have settled here in Tucson, Arizona, we have been questioned by our friends dozens of times….Why Why Tucson? 10 countries, over 1300 bird species, and now I have limited my various twitches to just one county, Pima, which pretty much surrounds the greater Tucson Arizona. So, why Tucson, why not?

Sulphur-bellied Flycatchers near Tucson

South East Arizona is known for some truly amazing birding, and another one of the specialties that this area is known for is the Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher – Myiodynasters luteiventris. This bird is rarely seen in the US, other than here, where this boldly patterned bird actually somewhat common, especially up in the Madera Canyon area.

Fall migration brings rarities to Tucson

When you think of Southeast Arizona Birding, and the unique birds that can be found there, it conjures thoughts of roadrunners, hummingbirds, trogons, and the many other desert residents. With close to 30 avid birders all gathered around the one sycamore tree, I am pretty sure the bird was ready for some peace and quiet.

Tucson Arizona is turning out to be a very birdy area. I have to admit I stole some parts of that phrase from the director of the Tucson Audubon Society, Jonathan E. In a Thanksgiving note to all the members, he used that phrase, and I agree, the birding options here are pretty numerous.

Sam Lena Park, Tucson, Arizona

In my continuing tour of the many sites for birding here in the Tucson, Arizona area, I have run across the Sam Lena Park, and athletic complex. Cattails line parts of the ponds, all of this giving shelter to a very nice variety of birds. One of my “First of Year” birds for Arizona was this lovely Yellow Warbler.

Little Big Year-Week 37: Settling down in Tucson AZ

Now that we have “settled” in Tucson, Arizona, or at least this is where the 5th Wheel is for the time being, it has been nice to be able to spread out a bit.
