Birding Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

10,000 Birds

Frankly, Ho Chi Minh City is not a place you would go to specifically for birding. But if you are there anyway (at the start of a longer birding trip) and have an afternoon to spare, then why not? This indicates that the bird is aware of where the predator is looking.

Birding Ruili, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

I admit this is not quite on the level of fellow writers’ posts describing birding as an extreme sport. The bird has now started using its scientific name, Hemipus picatus , as it is substantially shorter. Perhaps the middle section of blog posts should be relatively boring in order to get rid of the more casual readers.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 2)

10,000 Birds

According to the eBird description, it is everything I am not: a “neon-colored, noisy, highly social bird” Shudder to think (not the bird part though). Next, this post has a long section on babblers, a very ill-defined category of birds. But some of them look pretty interesting.

Some Hokkaido Winter Passerines

10,000 Birds

Given how far Hokkaido is from Europe, it seems a bit surprising how many bird species wintering on this Japanese island have a name starting with “Eurasian” Or how many of these species I have also seen in my parents’ garden in Germany. Like the Eurasian Nuthatch. People tend to eat more food when in company.

What the Owl Knows: The New Science of the World’s Most Enigmatic Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

I’ve been fortunate to encounter many owls in my birding life, sometimes because I’m looking for them, sometimes happily by happenstance. It’s also about human-owl interaction on an individual level and a wider sociocultural level, and ultimately how we can use all this for habitat and bird conservation.

Did humans kill off one of the last dinosaurs, er, giant birds?

10,000 Birds

It was a bird, and this is where the whole bird-dinosaur thing gets real. This is one of several giant birds that went extinct fairly recently, and in many cases, humans as suspected. The evidence consists of clusters of egg shells that are burned in a way the scientists suggest most likely done by humans.

Birding Shanghai in January 2024

10,000 Birds

If the birds were Germans, Siberian Rubythroats wintering in Xishuangbanna (where I saw them a few years ago) would certainly be described as “Warmduscher” by their fellow species members seen in Shanghai this month. It seems that like me, Oriental Storks are not that fond of humans. ”), etc.
