The three huge eagles are lottery winner rare and the Orange-breasted Falcon has never been documented for the country but the rest are seen here and there on an annual basis. As is often the case for tropical ecosystems, there may be hundreds of species of birds at a site, but many of them are naturally rare. Black Hawk-Eagle.

Another year of birding in Costa Rica has come to an end, another one begins. I bet some tanager flocks will be in the cards; birding in Costa Rica tends to deliver. It’s 2023 already and I have already started this year of birding. A male American Redstart flashed its Halloween finery and other birds flitted into view.

Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. So, just photos of the birds themselves. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

After weeks of preparation (and not writing many 10,000 Bird posts), my wife and I are finally in Spain. Algeciras, Spain, to be specific — right around the bay from Gibraltar. And in between, you can stop at the Cazalla Soaring Bird Observatory ( Cazalla Observatorio de Aves Planeadoras ). And so did the soaring birds.

The best birding of the day was found along the much quieter roads in the south east section. But this post will feature a Crested Serpent Eagle which presented itself irresistibly on a perch beside the road. As you might surmise from the name, it is a snake-eating eagle with a crest. The mate did not look impressed.
