As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. However, it is only a short taxi ride away from the airport where most travelers will arrive at – better to see birds instead of just eating fast food while waiting for a connecting flight.

And it is a great place for birding. This makes these sections ideal for birding, with a much-reduced risk of being killed by a passing truck. Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. Still, not a bird that merits flying 2000 km from your hometown.

So, I spent a lot of time birding this month, and to keep this post at a manageable length, it mostly only covers the first half of May. And if you like birding, it’s a good place to spend time before or after meetings and explore. Late autumn 2022, I decided flying in a day early to do some weekend birding. It was David’s first time birding. Now it was a bit lighter, diurnal birds became vocal. A weekday would be better for timid birds.

Although the two activities seem mutually exclusive at first glance, shopping mall parking lots and the edge habitats that surround them can be ideal for incidental birding in the holiday season or even any season. In southeastern Florida, most of the bird species restricted to parking lots and similar artificial habitats are exotic species.

But there’s still some regional biases for those who pay attention.

For a couple of years now, I have been chasing a bogey bird whenever I visit Dubai. The Arabian Babbler is a reasonably common bird with a preference for arid, scrubby areas. A couple of roads cut back through the circle to the central area which boasts a fast food restaurant, a mosque and toilets. .
