A Gentlemen’s Big Day’s Birding

Called The Big Bird Race , it tells the story of how my team, representing Country Life magazine , recorded 155 species in 24 hours in East Anglia (Suffolk and Norfolk).

Swarovski Skills Camp, or men and their toys

It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.

Birding Tongli Wetland Park

It would be difficult to identify by its Latin species name only though – albogularis means white-throated, which does not really strike me as this species’ main characteristic. The other species in the genus of Picumnus are all in the Americas, with the Speckled Piculet the only one in Asia.

The Beach is Back

Most of these are migratory species, for which Lake Cuitzeo is a vital wintering ground. I was particularly excited to see two local species that require deeper water: Ruddy Ducks and Clark’s Grebes. I took so many photos on this outing that my battery ran out of charge before I finally saw the Grebes , so no photos of those.).

Where could you go birding in Australia in 2023?

The reason for this particular camera is that I need a camera that takes AA batteries for when we are away from power for weeks on end and is not too large for travelling. There are Japanese made Eneloop Pro AA batteries that will last for over 1000 photos quite easily nowadays, so this is my ideal camera. Minyirr Park, Broome.

Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Birding Shanghai in February 2023

Not a cover species The Black Kite is not actually black, but of course, misleading bird names are not exactly rare. No surprise then that the species is listed as Vulnerable. But then, sanity (or maybe respect for you, the reader) prevailed. Fortunately, they are quite common in Shanghai.
