Not sure if this is the right subreddit to post in, I apologize. Last night I was jolted awake out of a dream in the middle of the night and thought I saw what looked to be a bat crawling up my door. I checked practically the whole house and no sign of bats. I stepped out of the room. Then went back in.

I like bats. So when I spotted a large, handsome Hoary Bat grounded at the side of the path while I walked Muir early one morning, my first thought – after I determined that it was not dead – was “how can I help? A different Hoary Bat, on a better day. It turns out, helping a bat is hard.

And birders spend a lot of their time watching the tree-crowns and, in the right place, spotting many other tree-dwellers. Strictly speaking, Mammals of Madagascar is not a field guide, because some larger groups (rodents, bats) cannot be identified down to a species level following the concise descriptions and a single illustration.

Photographing the Short-tailed Nighthawks involved exercises firstly in tracking their rapid, erratic and incredibly bat-like flight, and secondly in processing the remaining images once 99.99% were deleted. Once I looked through proper glass however, all doubt was blown to smithereens – it was a Bat Falcon.

In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans.

And this one’s was definitely when a bird briefly took wing just to the left of our path, only to settle right back down to the ground. Nacho assured me that these bats are fruit-eaters. That was a relief, since Mexico is home to all three of the world’s vampire bat species. But every outing has its high point.

This species is reasonably easy to find if you are in the right kind of habitat – but I am rarely in that type of habitat. And in order to see the bubbles underwater, one needs to be right above the bird. It was diving right behind me – it could not get any closer than that, and still, I haven’t seen it underwater!
