Humane rat control?

I think they might be taking shelter in an old decrepit shed. At night I hear things on the roof but dont know if its possums, cats, rats, who knows. Can I transport them away? I live in Australia. Should I be worried about this if they are in the back yard and not the house? There is no sign of them in the house.
