Last month we went camping and birding north of Broome and headed into the Northern Territory in search of some bird species that we had not seen yet this year. Some of the bird species we had observed already this year and they were on the 2016 year list , but we had not been able to photograph several of them at such close quarters.

White-winged Choughs – Corcorax melanorhamphos are native to southern and eastern Australia and one of the bird species that is likely to suddenly make you jump when you walk through a forest. Once you have been made aware of their presence it is quite enjoyable to just watch them move through the leaf litter.

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan

The park is the largest botanic garden in Australia and access is free. We also had Eastern Whipbirds hopping along the edge of the road tossing the leaf litter about in search of food. We encountered several species on different flowering plants including the Wanderer Butterfly. Satin Bowerbird -female. Satin Bowerbird bower.

Foster to Fish Creek

Some species I know I will see and other species I don’t observe on every walk. The weather has not been very warm at all in this part of Australia despite it being summer and we have been fortunate to have not been affected by the awful bush-fires. They are usually busy throwing leaf litter around on the forest floor.
