Borrow pit birding near Broome

This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. The borrow pit has one deep section of water and it is popular with Australasian Grebes.

Windjana Gorge in 2020

Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. Western Australia remains closed to everybody from everywhere. Green-backed Gerygones were calling and it is a species we always seek out when we visit.

A day trip to Derby

This particular bird species is not common around Broome, but easily found in Derby. The tide was out and we were hopeful of a Great-billed Heron , but luck was not on our side for this species on this visit. Both of these bird species are easier to find in Derby than in Broome. Little Egret. Kimberley Flycatcher.
