These migratory shorebirds crowd together for protection when they roost at high tide. The flocks are getting smaller day by day as they migrate to the northern hemisphere to breed. The shorebirds will then spread out across the tundra to breed and they will no longer be close to each other. Safety in numbers!

It is not unusual for only one Pied Oystercatcher chick to survive throughout the whole breeding season despite in excess of sixty eggs being laid by sixteen pairs. It is for this reason that there was not an update last year on Pied Oystercatchers breeding success , because there was not any. Nest site with a view. Eggs in the nest.

In the case of the two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that did actually hatch their eggs and have chicks for a few days they did lay once more, but then they failed to even hatch the second clutch and then no longer attempted to breed. Pied Oystercatcher shading and protecting its chick.

This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. Our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs for this year’s breeding season were laid early and were due to hatch last weekend. This offers a lot more protection than the exposed nest site. This is a sad outcome for the first attempt at breeding this year for Pied Oystercatchers. In the photo below it is a lot clearer.

I had seen one in the same location earlier in the year and was hoping to bump into it again before it headed north to it’s breeding grounds in the Arctic. The tide had receded slightly and the favoured roosting spot on the crook of a rundown pier was deserted in favour of the rocks on the west side of the protected harbour.

Gantheaume Point offers both food and protection for a young Pied Oystercatcher chick, which is very important when they are unable to fly. It will remain with its parents for a few more months and then join a non-breeding flock either to the south or north of Gantheaume Point. We would not expect it to breed for several years yet.

The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. They will only breed if the conditions are good and the male will be responsible for nest building and incubating the 6-12 eggs for approximately 60 days. He will then rear the young Emu for up to 18 months.

It is quite common for several clutches of Pied Oystercatcher eggs to be laid during the breeding season and often within ten days of egg or chick loss. They travel through the dunes where there is shade among the vegetation and some protection from predators.

The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice! Since discovering our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 we have observed the breeding of these local shorebirds along the coast between Gantheaume Point in the south and Willie Creek in the north, which is a distance of 23 kilometres. This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. They will be seeking protection where they can and they will return as soon as the rain eases.
