Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding

One bird species that we occasionally observe around Broome is the Yellow-billed Spoonbill, but we had not seen one for a few years until recently. We soon observed several bird species and then a Yellow-billed Spoonbill flew overhead. They are widespread throughout Australia , but it does not mean you necessarily easily observe them.

The Cattle Egret Expansion

Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. There has also been another tropical low that came very close to Broome dumping heavy rains and then continued around the coast of Western Australia. This bird species is known to travel large distances around Australia. They are no doubt breeding here once again this year. Wedge-tailed Eagle -bigger than the cattle!?

This is the only highway around Australia in this part of the country and we don’t need it falling to bits! The Great Egrets , Little Egrets and Intermediate Egrets are in breeding plumage and look quite spectacular. Intermediate Egret in breeding plumage. Water across the highway. Glossy Ibis and Egrets.

A day trip to Derby

This particular bird species is not common around Broome, but easily found in Derby. The Little Egret was showing some breeding plumage and it is the time of year for many birds to breed. The tide was out and we were hopeful of a Great-billed Heron , but luck was not on our side for this species on this visit.

Windjana Gorge in 2020

Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. Western Australia remains closed to everybody from everywhere. Green-backed Gerygones were calling and it is a species we always seek out when we visit.

Fish Creek to Buffalo

Over recent weeks I have been able to share some of my observations along the Great Southern Rail Trail in Victoria, Australia. They are very similar to the Masked Lapwings in the north of Australia, but of course they have ‘black shoulders”! Two Cattle Egrets with four cows! Black-shouldered Lapwings.
