Perhaps the star bird here is the Nonggang Babbler , which was first observed by professional ornithologists only in 2005. While the Black-throated Laughingthrush is native to Southeast Asia, it is also kept at the Toronto Zoo and has its own web page there. The birds are not closely related.

Also, isn’t exactly the part of the bird that I would think of as the throat black rather than white? The Silver-throated Bushtit also moves fast (though not quite as fast as the warbler) – but the photographer’s job was a bit easier as the adult birds had to return to a nest (birds have not invented mobile nests yet).

On the third day in Napo, the local driving me to a bird hide was coughing a lot. Healthy enough to enjoy the sight of some Blue-winged Minlas , both in a bird hide and in a local park. Birds of Hong Kong by Ray Tipper is portable and manageable, easy to carry and it fits into your vest pockets. While birds of prey are mostly shown in very good photos, there’s only one photo per species and I wish for a second photo, so both a standing bird and a bird in flight would be depicted.

For birders, the Wolongshan area is like a poorer cousin of Balangshan – due to the lower elevation, the bird species here are more common and thus less interesting. I can confirm that the Indian Blue Robin – as stated by the HBW – tends to sing from deep cover – not ideal behavior for a bird photographer.

The birds are moving around the globe as if nothing has happened. Dollarbirds left Broome earlier this year to return to Asia. They had arrived from Asia and were being chased away by Torresian Crows. This short section of power line is a great stop off for birds. This line gets used every day by many bird species.

The Siberian Rubythroat seems to somewhat lack a proper inbuilt GPS system – while it breeds as far west as the Ural Mountains and winters as far est as Central India, it does not migrate through central Asia in large numbers (even though this would be the shortest way). So better not let a rubythroat bite you. .

The poster bird of this area is the near-threatened Black-necked Crane. Not sure how I (or the bird itself) feel about the bird being named after a bird collector, though. A beautiful bird, but a disastrous name, if even some of the accusations against Przevalski of him being a massive racist are true.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. This bird is represented in an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. Can’t say that it is a particularly obvious name from seeing the bird.
