Gene Bauer from Farm Sanctuary appears in this article. I went to a restaurant for a work lunch and everyone ate meat but me, even the animal lovers. Pretty intense, but I hope people read it. There is a disturbing hedonism to eating. We just don't think about where that flesh came from.and most of us don't care.

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. Words like 'pastured,' 'grass-fed,' and 'free-range' are now synonymous with quality meat; they carry a potent if symbolic meaning that has eased many a consumer’s conscience and driven many a marketing campaign."

He says he hunts out of a need to take responsibility for his family, who evidently live where the supermarkets offer no meat. He says meat tastes more precious when you’ve watched it die. I’m tired of hearing people who enjoy killing justify it with specious moral platitudes. May I recommend a trip to a slaughterhouse?

Beyond the environmental impacts of meat production there is a basic ethical issue involved. I suspect that meat consumption would decline dramatically under such a code; it would certainly make many of us less hypocritical. Rather than eating dogs, we all ought to eat exclusively small-farmed, free-range meat.

If the goal is not moral perfection for ourselves, but the maximum benefit for animals, half-measures ought to be encouraged and appreciated. Go vegan, go vegetarian, go humane or just eat less meat.
