When I last visited the town almost 10 years ago, it had a Wild West feel, and Wikipedia claims that it is “an important location for trade with Myanmar, in both legal and illegal goods and services” but it seemed pretty tame to me this time.

Unfortunately, this paradise’s ecosystem is now threatened by alleged illegal mining operations. Recently this year, a clash between the authorities and a human barricade attempting to stop another mining operation has left two locals injured, one town councilor arrested, and countless others affected.

In fact, a recent article in the Economist on Singapore’s rewilding states “The oriental pied hornbill (pictured), with its extraordinary ivory casque, had been locally extinct for a century. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Now pairs of hornbills feed outside this correspondent’s window”.

A Spanish version of the following article appeared in the 9/4/11 edition of the Honduran publication, La Tribuna. Everyone talks about human rights and there exists so many groups that are either governmental or non-governmental who work toward that cause. In some parts of the country it is already illegal to have slingshots.

The article to look for is titled “ Ceratospira inglisi Ocular Infestation in a Wompoo Fruit-Dove” After viewing these photos, it is a good idea to relax your eyes by looking at a Brown Songlark. Similar to the (fortunately now gradually changing) situation among humans in China, these birds seem to prefer males over females.
