It’s a well-known fact that southeast Arizona in summer is awesome. My first birding trip ever was to Arizona. Here are some of the best experiences of my excellent trip. This was a wonderful re-introduction to the desert species I was seeking. It was time to drive south and up, to the Sky Islands of southeast Arizona.

Vagrancy in Birds is organized into two major parts: (1) A detailed, 62-page synthesis of research and theory and (2) “Family Accounts,” 259 pages covering bird families from Struthionidae/Ostriches) to Thraupidae/Tanagers and allies (Clements is the taxonomic authority). It’s not always easy reading. Don’t worry.

I like observing them, reading about them, grappling with species and subspecies identification, and even—on a good day—talking about sparrow taxonomy. Peterson Reference Guide to Sparrows of North America covers 61 species of the New World sparrow family Passerellidae that breed in Canada, the United States, and northern Mexico.

I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in Toronto had an extremely rare and beautiful Townsend’s Warbler x Black-throated Gray Warbler which was banded in April. I have chronicled the experience on my blog.

For birders, it’s the extremely large book, shelved in a place where it can’t crush the field guides, used to research the history of a bird in their area. You can see the Species Account for Henslow’s Sparrow above, in the banner photo. A breeding bird atlas is a special kind of book. The second page is the map page.

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. Hummingbird species, on the other hand, number in the hundreds.
