Though they are getting harder to find, Paul Matschie named the cross-river gorilla a new species in 1904. These gorillas live in groups of two to twenty and are extremely gregarious animals. Most likely, all individuals of a given species have very similar genes guiding very similar developmental processes, but produce different results because the plasticity itself is selected for. We know that animals can essentially lose their predator avoidance behaviors. This includes the tameness of some animals on the Falklands.

Other – sadly rather common – reasons are habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and the use of some veterinary drugs.

To the Editor: Re “ Ebola Imperils Gorilla Species in Congo Republic ” (news article, Dec. Historically, these diseases have been studied only when they affect human populations or domestic animals. In 2003, I was in the sanctuary described in your article and collected samples from those dead animals.

We have both resident and migratory species, and this post will briefly discuss each of the 20 species of African bee-eaters.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.
