And I suspect that people become vegetarians for precisely that reason: that by doing so they overcome the residue of guilt that attaches to every form of hubris, and in particular to the hubris of human freedom. The fact that geese mate for life, and that the mate of the poor goose that was slaughtered would step forward, was enough to make me swear off meat forever, if I hadn’t already. If people had to see what these animals are subjected to or take an active role in their deaths, I believe many more people would think before they eat.

Consequently, no turkey has suffered or died on my account for the past quarter century. They can't solve the problem of animal suffering all by themselves, so they throw up their hands in defeat and go on eating meat. Addendum: Sometimes, in talking to omnivores, I get the sense that they feel impotent. Surely not.

He thinks that the treatment of animals in factory farms is morally unjustifiable, and yet, he continues to support those practices financially by purchasing and eating meat and animal products. Since it would not be wrong to eat the flesh of animals raised in that manner, eating meat is not morally wrong!
