At the edge of the Oregon Cascades, rain is expected, and the researchers and scientists thought little of it as they continued about their daily tasks. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, “its roughly 3,900-mile movement (one-way) from Alaska to Mexico is equivalent to 78,470,000 body lengths.”

Like the Eastern Crowned Warbler (which eBird mysteriously calls a “boldly marked songbird” despite its similarity to about 50 other warbler species) … … and the Arctic Warbler (or maybe some other warbler looking very similar). Daniel Gustafsson and coauthors looked at chewing lice of the Grey-headed Lapwing.

In Alaska, they were found to mimic 30 different species ( source ). Maybe they have decided to boycott species with Russian-sounding names as a way to protest against Putin’s policies. Both eBird and the HBW agree that the Black-collared Starlin g is a large starling though.

Nearly 70 species of parrots have been recorded flying free at some stage or another in Miami, including Hyacinth Macaws. Dozens of other introduced bird species, largely escapees from pet owners, now call Miami home. But I couldn’t help but get more excited about the countable species as opposed to the uncountable ones.

Their total population, from the Baja Peninsula to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, is estimated at somewhere between 1 million and 3.5 Researchers are wondering if the die-off might spread to other birds or even fish.

The USVI are smaller and have fewer habitats and, as a result, fewer bird species. Much of the research regarding Caribbean ecology and ornithology has been conducted in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has a checklist of 269 species, 207 of which are migratory and the USVI has a checklist of 149 species, 124 of which are migratory.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.
