Pheasant Coucals are also a member of the cuckoo family, but are unique because they do actually raise their own young. All other cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and let them raise them. Masked Lapwing Africa is the spiritual home of the Vanellus family, boasting as many as 14 species including the abundant Crowned Lapwing. Anything posing a risk to their nests or young will be met by swift action with parent birds dive-bombing any potential threat and raising such a noise as to make the predator choose an easier option.

When zoo keepers saw that the baby was not eating and having trouble gaining weight, they made the decision to hand-raise him. The new cub was born at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens to a mother who wasn’t able to care for him. Now, at a little more than two pounds, the cub is eating well, getting stronger and eagerly exploring his new home.

It is estimated that due to conflicts with humans, the bushmeat and body parts trade, disease and habitat destruction, large mammals in Africa may be extinct by the end of this century.
