Futuyma is a synthesis of theory and research about evolution and birds. I needed to read some sections more than once to get the gist.

It also summarizes the vagrancy status of every bird family in the whole wide world, which makes it fun to read as well as superbly educational. The Family Accounts are the fun part of the book. The Family Accounts are also a deeply informational, documented source of information for researchers.

Bird communication is a complex and evolving science. Ballantine and Hyman explore how birds communicate and summarize studies on how that communication functions in diverse bird families all over the world. I do wish there was more about research on female bird song. And, that’s it.

It does seem like the order is concurrent with the 61st Supplement, which came out in 2020, but Northwestern Crow is included as a full species. Using the icons to locate specific bird families takes a little getting used to, but if you do it often it works well as a finding tool. These are all informative and current.
