The recently released 2014 State of the Birds Report lists the Bank Swallow as one of the common birds in steep decline. These birds have lost more than half their global population, and the 33 species combined have lost hundreds of millions of breeding individuals in just the past 40 years. One would think that a bird named Grey Butcherbird is a shrike or at least related to shrikes (which are commonly called butcherbirds), but one would be wrong, as Duncan already explained in a 2014 post for 10,000 Birds. “She monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach by bicycle and on foot.”

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. I can also monitor any movement along the coast during the year when they are no longer breeding.

Along Broome’s coastline we encounter literally hundreds of Red-necked Stint among all the flocks of migratory shorebirds that make Australia their home during the non-breeding season. This individual was more intent on feeding than worrying about our proximity and already had good breeding plumage.

Unlike other grouse species, the male Willow Ptarmigan remains with the female throughout the breeding season to help raise the chicks. Partners in Flight estimates that there are nearly 50 million breeding Willow Ptarmigan throughout the world. Willow Ptarmigan calls are apparently favorites with Steven Spielberg.

The striking Golden-cheeked Warbler nests only in the hills of central Texas near Austin but a substantial part of those breeding grounds have leveled in favor of development. We have been busy walking the beach and keeping an eye on our local Pied Oystercatchers and the two pairs that laid their eggs earliest for the 2018 breeding season and successfully hatched out their chicks have now lost their chicks to predation. It returns to Broome with a mottled breeding plumage pattern and gradually changes its moult during its stay. This past breeding season the pair that inhabit this area of reef successfully raised three young birds and the last chick finally left its parents at the end of 2014 and they now have the area to themselves once again.

While regular in winter, Pygmy Cormorants do not breed in the vicinity and are absent in spring and summer. There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. Third, Kirtland’s Warbler has only recently made the New York State checklist with two sightings in 2014. ( Fourth, not seeing a Kirtland’s Warbler in Central Park would mean that eventually I would have to make a trip to Michigan, the only place where they breed in any numbers, just to see a Kirtland’s Warbler some day.
