Pallid Cuckoo

10,000 Birds

We have several of the cuckoo species around the Broome area and all cuckoos are more likely to be heard than seen, but every now and again you get lucky! The Little Bronze-cuckoo cooperated in 2013 allowing me to photograph it and since then it has been heard often, observed, but not photographed! Pallid Cuckoo.

Into the Nest: A Book Review in the Time of Nesting

10,000 Birds

I’m happy to say that Laura Erickson and Marie Read have written a book, Into the Nest: Intimate Views of the Courting, Parenting, and Family Lives of Familiar Birds , that is not too cute and that does not anthropomorphize. Some chapters focus on one species (Yellow Warbler), some on several related species (Chickadees and Nuthatches).

Returning to Old Haunts

10,000 Birds

From Florida to Maine and back again I toured urban forests, marshes, estuaries, and more, stopping along the way to visit family and friends. Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Tiger Afternoon

10,000 Birds

Maharashtra, February 2013. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory.

Whooping Crane Ancestry

10,000 Birds

Over a decade from 1993 to 2004, conservationists released 289 captive-raised Whooping Cranes into Osceola, Lake and Polk counties in Central Florida. In late January of 2013 I spent some time with a pair of Whooping Cranes just off Canoe Creek Road in Osceola County, Florida. Today only 19 members of this dwindling flock remain.
