Bald Eagle image is by Francois Portmann and is used with permission You know, I’ve been thinking about this whole dustup over hunting cranes in Tennessee and now Kentucky. I think it’s time to hunt Sandhill Cranes. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species.

All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. The Waldrapp’s numbers continued declining despite intensive conservation efforts.

It has recently been reclassified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List; this category is reserved for only the most threatened species in the world. Conservationists searched intensively in 2011 but found none. It has not been seen in its small home range in central Vietnam since around 2000.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

Kirtland’s Warbler is a classic niche species; they breed in only very specific conditions, which occur in only a very specific area. That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. this species breeds.

As 2013 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 , 2011 , and 2012 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. Red Knot XS41059 was banded as a 1st year bird on September 11, 2011 near the town of Tain in the Scottish Highlands on the south shore of Dornoch Firth.

Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. However they will not and cannot breed, and once these individual’s natural lifespans are over, these bird populations will be lost forever. Is there a solution?
