A new proposal to lift the ban on commercial whaling has raised much concern amongst members of The International Fund for Animal Welfare and animal rights activists around the world. The number of whales each country will have permission to hunt is yet to be determined, and may ignore estimated sustainable whaling limits.

The Queen

Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She taught them how to hunt, and when they were released in the fall she stayed on her perch, dozing in the sun. The grand old bird became a surrogate mother, and raised them herself.

There was an empty lot of land next to us until 2010 – I remember seeing a distraught Blue-black Grassquit sitting on the fence as the bulldozer cleared the land. Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. Birds have also benefitted.
