Susliks are becoming rarer: they need cattle to graze and keep the grass short. But on modern farms, cattle are being kept indoors and if the pasture becomes overgrown, ground squirrels disappear. After a wakeup call at highly uncivilized 3.45 It is still cold. No Susliks are to be seen – they are waiting for the sun.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

Kazakhstan – May 2009 After our excellent time at the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve we bid a fond farewell to its gorgeous grassy terrain and made our way to a location where Sociable Lapwing were known to breed. Often, nests are near villages, though sometimes they are found on the shores of salt lakes or on hills.

That Cattle Egret I found in Somerset County, August 2009? My personal favorites are three photos of the 2009 Cape May Ivory Gull. Development, conservation, and climate change have affected bird distribution in good ways (a record 282 Bald Eagles found on the January 2009 official count!)
