Despite the fact that efforts are made to ensure they are not imprinted on humans, they are naturally confiding, even friendly. Incidentally, the first part of the scientific name of this ibis, Geronticus , means old man, reflecting the fact that this ibis is bald, just like an elderly human.

The reemergence of mad cow disease, discovered in a California dairy cow, could have major implications for the state’s meat industry, even though officials have said that the human food supply is unaffected. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy hasn’t been found in U.S. since 2006 and was discovered in only three instances before then.

In May 2003, Kroodsma, an internationally known expert on birdsong, spent ten weeks, riding four thousand-plus miles from Virginia to Oregon. Perhaps this sort of thing is to be expected whenever humans are together in close quarters for long periods. Whatever: he’s a great ornithological guide on many topics.

These two islands are about halfway between the tip of South Africa and Antarctica in the Subantarctic Indian Ocean, have had relatively few human visitors, and are primarily inhabited with some of the rarest seabirds in the world and a smaller number of mammals. Which makes it a haven for seabirds….and and seabirders.

It really makes you realise how sensitive the human body is to humidity variations. The weather over the last few years has not been wet enough to have them visit from the north and the last time we saw one in the area was in November 2003.
