Other contenders are Kookaburra, Shoebill, and Umbrellabird, but people smile when they hear these names because they know a song or because they can’t believe these are real names of real birds. <pause> Do I have your attention now?

Without birds like Blackburnian Warbler to spark people’s interest in birding, we would have far fewer birders. I strongly suspect that the rate of attrition on this Loon family is inversely proportionate to the abundance of ducklings in the bay. Non-bird watchers without binoculars and experience are notoriously bad sources of information. But now there is some research on that. And, every now and then one of the Loons disappears too.

So many birds of white and gray touched with black. So many immature birds utilizing a palette of brown and ecru, burnt umber, white and black. The ordering of the Species Accounts is based on Handbook of the Birds of the World, with some rearrangements (p.10). So many species that change eye color or leg color as they age.
