Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. For another species, the Firethroat , it meant I only got acceptable views rather than the really good ones reportedly possible a few weeks earlier. Still, not a bird that merits flying 2000 km from your hometown.

From there to the nearby Evros River Delta, at the very border with Turkey, with more easterly species such as the Spur-winged Plover.

Light broke and after Couch’s Kingbird I spotted my 2000 th lifer: Crimson-collared Grosbeak. The day was only minutes old and we already had 32 species on the day list. A very good celebratory bird. The male is beautiful (duh) but the female is very striking too, yellow instead of red. And besides, we were younger then.

The flocks of Black-headed Gulls were far away and huge, 500 to 2000, and it was quite a feat to keep one pair of eyes on one flock, the other pair busy detecting the next incoming flock. I was counting from a car parked at the Ada Huja riverbank with Sandra, a very keen young birder. For the day, at least.

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger.
