Trophy hunting is actually well regulated and pushes money into third world economies. I was against it until I did research and found it actually preserves a lot of species, as those countries are able to protect them from poachers with said money.

Trophy hunting is used for population control and species support. With black rhinos for example, male bulls will get cantankerous, aggressive, and dangerous at older ages. They are one of the populations that has hunting licenses sold for taking them down, and in selling the rights to hunt the target rhino, third-world countries have tourism money coming in as well as population control for the animals. This subset of rhinos can cause property damage and are very dangerous for people and other rhinos, and some are culled to retain the population as it is.

Not every trophy hunter goes through the "proper" channels for taking down trophy-type animals, but most do at this point.

There's a great radiolab episode called "The Rhino Hunter" that you might find to be useful education.
