What do i do with this egg i found?

Hello everyone. I found this egg in the middle of my yard on the ground about half an hour ago, i didn't want to leave it there because it seemed misplaced, we have a dog walking around freely with a good appetite and the temperature outside is 3°C. When i picked the egg up it was already cold, it's around 2.5 by 2cm in size. After picking it up i carefully washed it under lukewarm water and kept it in my hand for warmth, now i have placed it in a small box and under a lamp (you can see the setup in the 2nd picture). I called up some family members and by their understanding it's a pigeon egg. What should i do next and what are the chances of the bird surviving?

if you’re anything like me you’ll put in in your pocket then go to the pub, and when you go to piss shove your hand in your pocket and get covered in rancid egg. not my finest moment (i was drunk when i found it, explaining why i thought the pocket was the best place to put it)

More info: I tried shining a light through it and it seems like there's only a yellow blob floating inside.

I like your avatar lol

Yours looks nice too!

this egg has nearly zero chance of survival. Place it back where you found it, as it is a valuable meal for a predator.

That's sadly what I've been hearing quite a lot. Seems like the right thing to do. Thanks.

From my understanding, which admittedly could be wrong, if it was cold already then it's unlikely to survive.

Shining the torch through it and finding just a blob isn't that surprising if it's a new egg. It takes a while to grow into something viable.

Edit: researching it a little I've found that they can remain unincubated for quite a while before dying. Thinking about it dove nests are so poor that it's difficult to believe they ever survive to hatching.

When eggs are not viable birds know it they will sometimes toss the egg from the nest. It will not survive you should either toss it or leave it for another hungry animal. It is sad but it is nature. We have a mourning dove pair that has made a nest in the wiper bay of our 2nd car they laid the 2 eggs April 4, they normally take 14-15 days to hatch but given that we have had a rather wet and cold April and they have yet to hatch they too are probably not viable. The egg in your picture is identical to our doves pure white, mourning dove eggs are porous and any water that gets into the egg will drown the hatchling. Sorry.

porous and any water that gets into the egg will drown the hatchling.

Eggs have a membrane just under the shell. Eggs shells are porous, but that membrane is only permeable to gasses.

"Dove eggs are not waterproof, so anything that gets on the egg can affect the baby inside."

"Be sure the egg is not flat. Lay it on an angle flat side down as you will drown the baby if their is not an air bubble at the top of the egg."

"Water can drown a mourning dove hatchling. Dove eggs don't have a waterproof membrane, so anything you put on the egg can penetrate the shell and affect the baby inside, baby bird may drown it. "

Dove eggs laid without shells are called soft-shelled eggs. The hard shell never formed around the egg, which presents as just the tough inner membrane protecting the egg white and yolk.

Edit:

All bird eggs contain the following components: The embryo is the immature developing chick. The amnion is a membrane that initially covers the embryo and eventually fills with amniotic fluid, provides the embryo with protection against shock from movement.

"Dove eggs don't have a waterproof membrane like chicken eggs, so it's important to avoid getting them wet. Anything that gets on the egg can penetrate the shell and affect the baby inside."  Not sure what you don't understand?

For entertainment, to confirm pigeon, Google nests of birds, memes. They give a very apt picture.

I appreciate you trying to save it, even if it was too late. Someone will eat it though. Let it go back to nature and feed someone else along the food chain.

We have pigeons roosting on our roof under our solar panels and they barely fit under there. However, I’ve seen several broken eggs that size on our driveway. There is no nesting material, but the pigeon laid the eggs on the slant of our roof and they rolled down and splattered on the driveway.

I’m guessing that when pigeons are young and mate, they aren’t sure of what their bodies are doing (kind of like humans), so they lay their eggs wherever — on a roof, maybe in flight, on a bush, etc. More than likely those misplaced eggs do not survive to become baby pigeons because (if they survive what happens to them) they lack the warmth of the mother pigeon’s feathery body!

You can try keeping it warm and see if that works. It IS a fertilized egg, so maybe all it needs is constant warmth to help it grow and hatch! GOOD LUCK!! 👍 ♥️👍

Probably a Crows egg. Mash it up and make some Fight Milk.

It’s funny the post I saw before this one was someone’s omelette 😂

take good care of it! <3

Boil and eat

Eat it

Sit on it

You should give it to someone in these trying times

If it's still wet I'd take it back outside and plant it before it gets to dark, hopefully it can still take root.

That’s dark.

Search up how to candle an egg.

Hatch it and raise it as your own.

Eat it

It is likely a dove. They are dumb as stumps and will drop eggs anywhere.

Would be very cute as a deviled egg.

False statement.

Birds throw away eggs cause they aren't viable 💀
